Vice Captain’s Day Out
A great day was had by all on the Vice Captain, Trevor Rathbone’s day out at Trentham Park Golf Club. The weather was excellent, the greens were immaculate and we had a lovely meal afterwards. This is the only chance I get to play strokeplay against the members and it was nice to come out on top!
I scored 36 points, with five birdies. I am always happy to shoot level par around a course I have not played before. Gary Johnstone, Chris Hoyland and Dan Mace came in second, third and fourth place respectively. I played with the Captain and the President and we had a great time, neither of them were on form but there was a close contest for who would reach 20 points first. The president won this but the Captain was victorious with a birdie on the last.

Cheshire and North Wales Open
On Monday I managed to get out to play in the Cheshire and North Wales Open at Northop GC in Wales. The conditions were tricky with a strong wind and bouncy conditions. I finished in 8thplace at +2, slightly frustrating as I was two under after 11 holes and the winner finished on two under. The group in front let us through and I lost my concentration, making a double bogey and a few silly errors from there in. All of this was good practice for my biggest competition of the year next week when I go down to Saunton GC to play in the English PGA Professional Championship. This is a three-round event for the top 144 PGA professionals in England. |
New Teaching Professional
I am pleased to announce that I have brought in an extra teaching professional to assist with coaching at the club. I have had a very busy time over the past few months which has not allowed me to put as much time into junior group coaching and get into golf coaching as I would have liked. Steve is going to take over these two areas, Steve is going to combine working here with working at Carden Park Golf Club. |
New K-Vest Wrist Angles Software
Some of you who have been in for a lesson over the past few weeks will have experienced using the new wrist angles software. This allows us to measure how much you are bowing and cupping your wrists throughout the swing and how you are releasing the club. These angles have an unbelievable influence on what the ball does – if you want to hit it higher or lower, draw or fade, this information can help you. Below is an example of James, who has had a few lessons over the past few weeks. We identified that his biggest weakness was that he was hitting the ball too high and had a tendency to hit it from left to right. As you can see in the pictures below, the ‘before’ picture shows the shaft coming down in a more vertical position with the clubface slightly more open. When you have a look at the ‘after’ picture, his clubface is slightly more closed with the shaft coming in on a shallower angle. This was enough of a change to eliminate any left-to-right on his shots and improve the quality of the strike. |
If you would like to change your ball flight, please click here to book a lesson. We offer all new customers an introductory 30 minute lesson for just £9.99. |
The toughest test in Golf? Confirmed. Well done, Brooks Koepka. The young American became the first golfer to win back-to-back U.S. Opens in almost 30 years with victory at Shinnecock Hills over the weekend. His story makes for interesting reading. Unlike many other top American collegiate golfers, Koepka headed over to Europe to compete on the Challenge Tour when he first turned professional in 2012. Three wins during the 2013 season gained him a full European Tour card for the 2014 circuit, which resulted in one victory and several top-10 finishes, earning Koepka the Rookie of the Year award. 2015 brought about his maiden PGA Tour triumph, a place on the USA Ryder Cup team came in 2016, which was followed by his two U.S. Open crowns in 2017 and 2018. But the new world number four was given a run for his money by Tommy Fleetwood’s flawless final round flourish. The Englishman was one of the early starters on Sunday and carded a record-equalling seven-under-par 63 to propel him up the leaderboard and set the clubhouse lead at two over. With the final groups still having nine holes left to play, Fleetwood’s score had every chance of at least forcing a playoff, but Koepka’s two-under 68 left him one ahead of Fleetwood in second place. Among all the stories of the weekend, none will gather momentum like Saturday’s silly scenes, which resulted in just three players shooting under-par all day. Firm, lightning quick greens combined with inaccessible pin positions and penal rough had the USGA apologising yet again. Conditions that no doubt contributed to Mickelson’s maddest moment (watch our video below), which left golf fans speechless across the world. But what did you make of Saturday’s conditions and the U.S. Open as a whole? A true test of golf or an absolute farce? Click here to have your say. |

[* END *] Summer golf throws up different requirements and skill sets to that of winter golf, and you’ll often find yourself in positions or playing shots that you wouldn’t necessarily face at the other times of the year. The checklist below highlights the main performance differences you’ll notice between seasons, with an emphasis on distance in the winter and control in the summer. |
A great option all-year round These factors can make settling on one ball confusing, so here are our thoughts on why the TaylorMade Project (s) could be your perfect option. Not only does its large inner core deliver faster ball speeds for winter distance, but it also boasts a low compression that helps slower swinging players generate the high spin needed on firm summer greens. | |
