GB&I PGA Professional Championship

My goal at the start of the week was to make the cut and I couldn’t have got much closer to achieving it! After my first round of one under par I knew I would need something similar to make the cut in my second round.

I started off well picking up a shot at the second hole to get to two under. I failed to get up and down at the 5th to go back to -1 before missing good birdie chances at the next 4 holes. I bogeyed 10 after leaving myself with a tricky sloping lie on the fairway. The last eight holes I played really well leaving myself makeable birdie putts on every hole and managed to get back to -1 going up the last. I pushed my tee shot slightly into the rough and then I hit a great 7 iron straight down the flag but got a flyer and it rolled over the back giving me little chance of getting up and down.

Some big positives to take from the week, hopefully I can qualify again for the event next year!

Lost your groove?

Much like the tyres on your car, there comes a time when the grooves on your wedges have worn away so much that they need replacing. This process occurs slowly over time and is something that you might not notice at first glance, but when the wear becomes apparent it can have serious consequences on your game.

Fresh vs worn grooves

It might seem a little extreme, but the graphic above illustrates the impact worn grooves can have on shots into greens - a lower ball flight that rolls out farther compared to a wedge with fresh grooves.

Yes, you might be able to adapt by pitching the ball shorter and letting it roll out, but when you don't have much green to work with or are playing a delicate shot worn grooves will be of no use.

What do we suggest?

If dirt, grit and water have visibly harmed your wedge face, it’s time to get your groove back with a new wedge set-up.
